South Lions Park Community Watch meeting tonight!

Good morning, Eastsiders!

There will be a community watch organizational meeting for the neighborhoods just south of Lions Park and north of Glascock. This includes Bennett Woods, Heritage Heights, Breezy Heights, Lions Way, and Leyland Heights.

The meeting will take place at 6:00 PM at the Lions Park Community Center, 516 Dennis Avenue. Light refreshments will be served.

Again, this is for the neighborhoods immediately south of Lions Park. Here’s a PDF map of the neighborhoods.

Lions Park to host national BMX event!

Did you know that our own Lions Park hosts one of only five BMX tracks
in the state? It’s the home track of the Capital City BMX (CCBMX) club.
BMX racing is exciting to watch: these riders take their bikes over a
bone-rattling dirt track, catching air at times! It’s an X-Games worthy
event.

Capital City BMX is honored to have been selected by the American
Bicycle Association to host its East Coast Nationals event from August
14th to August 16th! It’s a prestigious event that will bring lots of
visitors from all over the country. You won’t want to miss it!

East CAC meets Monday, July 20th at 7PM

Good morning, Eastsiders!

We’ve got quite a CAC meeting shaping up for Monday! After our usual reports, we’ll hear an announcement from Martha Hobbs on the nomination of Longview Gardens as a National Historic District. The Raleigh Historic Districts Commission will hold a public meeting for more in-depth questions from Longview neighborhood residents on August 10th.

Next up will be our special guest, Raleigh Police Chief Harry Dolan, who will be conducting a brainstorming session to better align the police department’s resources with the community’s needs.

Following the Chief’s presentation, we’ll hear from Lt. Embry (ret.) and Sgt. Darrow about Raleigh’s new RPD Volunteer program, where citizens can assist the police department with various tasks.

Police officers have distributed hundreds of flyers to neighborhood residents in an effort to get them to Monday’s meeting. Many Longview residents will also be attending for the Historic District announcement. Thus we will likely have a VERY full room Monday evening, so we suggest you get there early if you hope to get a seat.

Chair Mark Turner called the June meeting of Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, June 15. He wanted to try to keep things moving along to make ample time for the post-meeting summer social, with food and soft drinks provided by MoJoe’s Burger Joint at 620 Glenwood Ave. courtesy of the owner, CAC Vice Chair Van Alston.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Mark reported that the CAC leadership met with Raleigh Police Chief Dolan and his staff earlier in the day to discuss the need for increased police visibility in the area of Raleigh Boulevard and Glascock Street, where there is a significant crime problem. He came away optimistic that we will see increased police activity there, including the possibility of a police substation in the Food Lion shopping center.

Digital TV transition happens Friday

Are you still watching analog TV? That is, do you not have cable TV, satellite, TV, or a digital converter box? If so, you may be in for a surprise Friday afternoon, when TV stations across the nation switch off their analog signals permanently and switch over to digital-only ones.

In other words, unless you subscribe to cable or satellite TV or have a digital converter box, all you’ll get on your analog TV will be static after 1PM Friday.

What can you do to keep receiving free TV? Digital converter boxes are available from most electronics retailers for as little as $40. If you obtain a converter box coupon from the federal government, you can buy a converter box almost for free!

NOTE: If you’ve already got a digital converter box, good for you! However, after Friday you will need to make it rescan the available channels as the channel frequencies will change.

Chairman Mark Turner opened the monthly meeting of the East CAC at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2009 at Lion’s Park Community Center, with 34 people attending throughout the evening. They included five students with the Citizens’ Participation Leadership Institute, an educational program for Raleigh residents seeking deeper engagement with city government. POLICE REPORT: Officer Kryskowiak gave the monthly crime update. He was not able to provide the usual detailed report from the department because the person who compiles it was out of the office, but he provided several maps with crime data.

The East CAC meets Monday, May 18th

Hello, Eastsiders!

Our East CAC meeting for May 2009 will take place Monday evening at 7PM at the Lions Park Community Center.

This month we hear from Susan Hansell who will discuss the Communities in Schools program and how you can help make a difference in a child’s life. We’ll also hear about the Wake Tech Community College Health Sciences Building and parking deck proposed for Sunnybrook Road near WakeMed. We’ll also be voting again on Z-15-09, Donald Ross Drive and hearing from our committees.

Draft minutes of the April 2009 East CAC meeting

The monthly meeting of the East CAC opened at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2009 at Lion’s Park Community Center, with 51 people attending throughout the evening. Chair Mark Turner opened with announcements, noting the birth three weeks ago of a baby boy to the area’s community policeman, Officer Kryskowiak, and his wife. Turner also reported that a recent trash cleanup in the north part of the CAC was a success, with car tires, a rusty bike and two couches among the items removed, and participants enjoying snacks courtesy of the City of Raleigh Community Services Department and Dunkin Donuts. In May there will another cleanup of the stream area along Brookside Drive in cooperation with the Mordecai CAC, with more information to come.

It was also announced that a petition would be presented to City Council on April 21 on behalf of Enloe and all city high schools to boost the number of police officers in those facilities. Currently all the schools have one officer, but concerned parents are asking for one officer per 1,000 students. It was noted that intensified policing has made a positive difference around Enloe, which has been experiencing problems with gang activity and robberies of students and staff.

We live in the northern portion of Lockwood close to Powell Elementary.

Did you move here from another state or city, or from another location in Raleigh?
Prior to moving to our house on Euston Street, we lived in Lions Park/Heritage Heights right next door to the park.
