Volunteers still needed for post-tornado rebuilding!

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

From Larry Marks, President of the Wake Interfaith Disaster Team:

Wake Interfaith Disaster Team is leading the long-term recovery from damages caused by the April 16 tornadoes. There are still homes in need of repair where insurance funds and government loans and grants have been exhausted. We are repairing these homes with donated materials and volunteer labor.

We need unskilled and skilled volunteers now and for the next several weeks. Housing and meals will be provided if needed. Volunteer as an individual or put together a team from your congregation, civic group, or workplace. Volunteer for a day, multiple days, or a week.

Sign up now with our construction partner, NC Baptist Men, at: http://baptistsonmission.org/Projects/North-Carolina/Tornado/Get-Involved

Your efforts will be greatly appreciated.

Chance for significant snow over the weekend

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The National Weather Service forecast for Saturday (Christmas Day) calls for show that could potentially be significant. Some sources say it could be a “historic” snowfall, paralyzing travel all up and down the coast.

It’s too early to say what this storm will do for sure, but you would be wise to keep attuned to the changing weather situation. If you travel for Christmas, plan to arrive at your destination by Saturday afternoon and expect not to travel for a few days. Stock an emergency kit for your car, including some food, water, and blankets.

Here’s the text from the current hazardous weather outlook:

City council deems East Raleigh nightclub a nuisance
By Sarah Ovaska – Staff writer

RALEIGH City leaders took aim at a troubled East Raleigh nightclub Monday by moving forward with plans to have Club Envy declared a public nuisance and permanently shuttered.

Raleigh’s city council voted to have its attorney file a public nuisance lawsuit against the club, which previously operated as Black Tie Nightclub in its location across New Bern Avenue from WakeMed Raleigh Campus. The lawsuit should be filed later this week, said Thomas McCormick, Raleigh’s city attorney.

Tour a Recycling Sorting Center!

Tour a Recycling Sorting Center!

Material Recovery Facility (MRF)

Have you ever wondered what happens to the recyclable materials once Raleigh Recycling crews collect them from your recycling bin? They are all mixed together in the recycling truck. Where do they go? Who’s going to deal with that mess of materials? What if unacceptable materials got put in?

Get your questions answered! Raleigh Recycling is now offering quarterly tours of our recycling contractor’s processing facility. The place where all the materials are taken is called a material recovery facility, usually abbreviated MRF, and pronounced “merf”. This is the place where all the materials are sorted out – both by people and by equipment. Once sorted, each material gets baled up and is shipped off to a manufacturer to be made into new products.

Projects needed for Service Raleigh day, March 27th

Friday, February 26th, 2010

It’s that time of year when the NCSU volunteers with Service Raleigh look for projects to assist with in the community. Some Service Raleigh volunteers will be planting trees in East Raleigh in association with Trees Across Raleigh. Beyond that, there are still opportunities for these folks to help improve our community.

This year’s Service Raleigh day is Saturday, March 27th.

If you know of projects around East Raleigh that a team of volunteers could assist with, such as trash collection, insulating or painting homes, stream cleanup, or other such projects, let me know and I’ll work to get them done. The deadline for submitting projects is March 5th (next week), so please send those ideas ASAP!

Find out more at http://www.serviceraleigh.org.

Have a great weekend!

Survey on non-bottle rigid plastic recycling

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Linda Leighton of Raleigh’s Solid Waste Services is seeking input on recycling non-bottle rigid plastic. See her note below:

Time sensitive! If you wish to participate in this survey your response is needed by January 20th and the survey involves collecting and weighing your regular household plastics over a two week period.

We get calls every week from residents like you wishing we could recycle the rigid non-bottle shaped plastics such as margarine tubs, yogurt cups, deli trays, etc. This is your opportunity to provide some
important data to the APR Rigid Plastics Recycling Committee so they can begin to build a knowledge base on the current status of rigid plastics in the home.

For the rigid plastics include all the tubs, cups, pots, and trays, but do not include clam shells, Styrofoam or film.

The survey is quite simple and should be returned to me [Linda] no later than January 20, 2010.

Return the survey to Linda Leighton at linda dot leighton at ci dot raleigh dot nc dot us.
