East CAC meets Monday

The East CAC will hold its September 2011 meeting Monday, September 19th at 7 PM at Lions Park Community Center, 516 Dennis Avenue. http://is.gd/nwDQ. The meeting will be streamed live on http://www.eastraleigh.org/stream.html.

Did you know about Raleigh Parks and Recreation’s Adventure program? Learn how to rock climb, kayak, backpack, and other exciting adventures through this fantastic city program. Seth Yearout, Adventure Program Manager, will tell us more.

We were going to hear from Raleigh-Wake CERT this month but unfortunately they had to cancel at the last minute.

We’ll also hear from David Blount about Raleigh’s upcoming transportation bond and what it means for our city. We’ll also get an update on the noisy Enloe HVAC, and neighbor John Seitz will update us on traffic calming efforts along Glascock Street.

Volunteers still needed for post-tornado rebuilding!

From Larry Marks, President of the Wake Interfaith Disaster Team:

Wake Interfaith Disaster Team is leading the long-term recovery from damages caused by the April 16 tornadoes. There are still homes in need of repair where insurance funds and government loans and grants have been exhausted. We are repairing these homes with donated materials and volunteer labor.

We need unskilled and skilled volunteers now and for the next several weeks. Housing and meals will be provided if needed. Volunteer as an individual or put together a team from your congregation, civic group, or workplace. Volunteer for a day, multiple days, or a week.

East CAC meets Monday, July 18th

The East CAC will hold its July 2011 meeting Monday at 7 PM at Lions Park Community Center, 516 Dennis Avenue.

Many folks have questions about St. Augustine’s proposed 5,000 seat stadium. This month Marc Newman from St. Augustine’s College will return to discuss the school’s proposal and answer questions. We’ll also hear from Deidre McCullers from the Family Resource Center, who’ll be talking about foster care recruitment.

Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council held its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011 at Lions Park Community Center. About 30 people attended, with about five there for the first time. Chairman Mark Turner recorded the meeting, with video available at www.eastraleigh.org.
Secretary Sue Sturgis reported that a change was made to the draft minutes from the May meeting in the section about the discussion on tornado recovery; the final version posted on the website will reflect those edits. The minutes were approved without any additional changes.

NEIGHBORHOOD REPORTS: Mark reported that Belvidere Park and Woodcrest held a community potluck at Lions Park over the weekend. There was a good turnout, and Mark encouraged other neighborhoods to hold similar events. Continue reading “June 2011 East CAC draft minutes”

St. Augustine’s proposed 5,000 seat stadium

St. Augustine’s College has proposed building a 5,000 seat stadium on its property, seeking Council approval. In 2004, the college was granted a Special Use Permit for a much smaller facility but has opted recently to pursue a larger one. Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods have concerns about the impact such a stadium will have on the community.

Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council held its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011 at Lions Park Community Center. About 35 people were there, with about six attending for the first time; Charlene Willard with the city’s Community Services Department handed out bags with information about the CAC and the city to newcomers. The April minutes were approved without changes. Chairman Mark Turner recorded the meeting, with video available at www.eastraleigh.org.

SUCCESS REPORTS: The entrance sign to the Belvidere Park neighborhood is finished, and the bench delivered and installed. The project was three years in the making. Thanks to local stonemason Joe Valles and everyone else who helped with the project. Longview Gardens is now moving forward with their grant to build a neighborhood sign.
