East CAC Meeting Minutes

Chairman Mark Turner called the meeting of the Raleigh East CAC to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, June 21 at Lions Park Community Center. The meeting was recorded, with streaming video available at www.eastraleigh.org. The May minutes were approved with the correction of a typo.

Announcements: On June 22 the City Planning Department will hold a transition workshop to discuss zoning around different types of uses. The neighborhood association and CAC portion of the workshop is from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; there will also be a community workshop later that evening. This is of interest to the ECAC since the group will be involved in the redevelopment of the New Bern and Capital Boulevard corridors.

The Capital Boulevard study workshop will take place on Thursday, June 24 at Bobby Murray Chevrolet. Registration will begin at 6 p.m., and the meeting is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30. Please pre-register if you can so the city has an idea of how many people to expect.

Capital Boulevard Workshop video online

For those of you who didn’t get a chance to participate in last evening’s Capital Boulevard Corridor Workshop at Bobby Murray Chevrolet, the meeting video is available online.

There is a period of time from about 0:30 until 1:20 where participants were working. At 1:20, they discuss their findings. You might want to watch the initial presentation and then skip over to 1:20 to hear the results.

Thanks to everyone who participated. It was an overwhelming response!

Chairman Mark Turner called the meeting of the Raleigh East CAC to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, May 17 at Lions Park Community Center. There were about 28 people in attendance. The meeting was streamed on the Internet. The April minutes were approved.

In good news from the community, Mark reported that he took part in a meeting with the management of Raleigh North and the Food Lion shopping center to discuss organizing a neighborhood festival for mid-August.

The East and Mordecai CACs are planning a cleanup of the Cemetery Branch Creek along Brookside Avenue for Saturday, June 5. Everyone’s invited to take part.

Chairman Mark Turner called the meeting of the East CAC to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, March 15 at Lions Park Community Center. There were about 65 people in attendance, with about a dozen attending for the first time. The meeting was recorded, and the audio will be available at www.eastraleigh.org. The February minutes were approved.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Lions Park playground community build will be held on Saturday, May 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. People have to be at least 18 years old to participate. For details on how to participate, contact Cindy Trumbower, the Parks and Recreation volunteer coordinator, at 996-3292.

Mark also noted that Census forms would be landing soon in people’s mailboxes—please fill them out and ask your neighbors to do likewise.

Chairman Mark Turner called the meeting of the East CAC to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, February 15 at Lions Park Community Center. There were about 35 people in attendance, with about a half-dozen attending for the first time. The meeting was recorded, and the audio will be available at www.eastraleigh.org. The January minutes were approved.

OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS: In good news from around the CAC, Raleigh Community Services Liaison Charlene Willard reported that the Lions Park South Community Watch has been formed, and she presented members with a plaque for their organization. Charlene would like the entire CAC to be represented by community watches.

She also reported on the Pepsi Refresh Project, a website sponsored by the soda company that allows people, businesses and non-profits to submit “ideas that will have a positive impact.” Site visitors get to vote on their favorites, which are eligible for grants of between $5,000 and $250,000. East CAC Chairman Mark Turner opened the East Citizens Advisory Council meeting at Lions Park community center shortly after 7 p.m. About 45 people were in attendance throughout the evening. The November 2009 minutes were approved.

OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS: In good news from around the CAC, Mark reported that Raleigh Police Captain Stacy Deans has been promoted to Southeast District Commander following the retirement of Captain Tom Earnhardt. Also on the policing front, negotiations continue on the RPD field office planned for the Food Lion Shopping Center at Raleigh Boulevard and Glascock Street.

Katherine Savage, coordinator of the Raleigh Community Gardens Meetup Group announced a community garden project at Alliance Medical Ministry at New Bern Avenue and Donald Ross Drive. The project got underway in the fall and welcomes local residents who want to get involved. Once there’s a critical mass of about 15 to 20 committed volunteers, the Interfaith Food Shuttle will run the project. There will be canvass of the neighborhood the weekend of Feb. 20 to tell residents about the project. For more information, contact Katherine at katherines3 [at] gmail.com

Chair Mark Turner called the meeting of Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, November 16 at Lions Park Community Center. There were about 70 people in attendance throughout the evening; when asked how many were attending their first CAC meeting, about a half-dozen people raised a hand. The October minutes were approved without changes.

OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS: Charlene Willard, the Raleigh Community Services Department’s liaison to the CAC, was welcomed back with a round of applause. She missed the October meeting after injuring her legs in a fall at the Lions Park parking lot immediately following the September meeting.

PARKS AND RECREATION REPORT: Lions Park Director Christy Jones reported that her staff recently organized a winter coat drive and provided 75 donated coats to families in need.

Pullen Park will be closing soon for renovations, but first it will hold a Holiday Express event from December 10-13 from 4 to 9 p.m. Tickets for the event, which will feature special train rides and Santa Claus, are $7 a person. Chair Mark Turner called the August meeting of Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, September 21 at Lions Park Community Center. There were about 35 people in attendance throughout the evening. The August minutes were approved.

OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS: Signs are available to help spread the word about CAC meetings. People are invited to take one and put it up in their yard the Friday before monthly meetings to encourage neighbors to get involved.

Mark reported that his neighbor and East CAC resident Scott Hazard, a sculptor and photographer, has an exhibit through October at Artspace, a nonprofit visual art center at 201 E. Davie St. in downtown Raleigh.

Chair Mark Turner called the August meeting of Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, August 17 at Lions Park Community Center. There were about 30 people in attendance throughout the evening. The July minutes were approved.

OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS: The CAC’s Outreach, Planning and Economic Development Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14 at the Lions Park center to discuss rezoning case Z-18-09 involving the Longview Grocery at 2405 Poole Road at Norwood with developer Daniel Coleman.

This involves a rezoning from Residential-6, which the city imposed on the store when it annexed the area in 1948, to Shopping Center-Conditional Use, with conditions including no convenience store, auto facility or drive-through restaurant. A public hearing is scheduled for October 21 before a joint panel of the City Council and Planning Commission.
