At our last meeting, the East CAC held a brainstorming session with the Raleigh Police Department to establish policing priorities in our area. Here are the results as compiled by Mr. Michael Ballen, RPD’s Community Policing Coordinator.

Lions Park/East CAC Residents Establish Community-Directed Priorities

On July 20, over 75 citizens from the Lions Park community joined with representatives from RPD to develop collaborative strategies to address neighborhood public safety and quality-of-life concerns. Participants were divided into work groups and came up with several priorities for community policing efforts. These priorities are listed below, ranked by degree of urgency:

Loitering at Food Lion and Maxway: Neighbors feel that people loiter at the two stores in the 1100 block of Raleigh Boulevard and cause trouble.

Problem Businesses/Houses: Neighbors feel that some areas in the community harbor and condone behavior that conflicts with the quality of life. Specific areas include the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Capital Boulevard, the 1100 block of Raleigh Boulevard, and rooming houses.

Good morning, Eastsiders!

We’ve got quite a CAC meeting shaping up for Monday! After our usual reports, we’ll hear an announcement from Martha Hobbs on the nomination of Longview Gardens as a National Historic District. The Raleigh Historic Districts Commission will hold a public meeting for more in-depth questions from Longview neighborhood residents on August 10th.

Next up will be our special guest, Raleigh Police Chief Harry Dolan, who will be conducting a brainstorming session to better align the police department’s resources with the community’s needs.

Following the Chief’s presentation, we’ll hear from Lt. Embry (ret.) and Sgt. Darrow about Raleigh’s new RPD Volunteer program, where citizens can assist the police department with various tasks.

Police officers have distributed hundreds of flyers to neighborhood residents in an effort to get them to Monday’s meeting. Many Longview residents will also be attending for the Historic District announcement. Thus we will likely have a VERY full room Monday evening, so we suggest you get there early if you hope to get a seat.

Hello, Eastsiders!

Our East CAC meeting for May 2009 will take place Monday evening at 7PM at the Lions Park Community Center.

This month we hear from Susan Hansell who will discuss the Communities in Schools program and how you can help make a difference in a child’s life. We’ll also hear about the Wake Tech Community College Health Sciences Building and parking deck proposed for Sunnybrook Road near WakeMed. We’ll also be voting again on Z-15-09, Donald Ross Drive and hearing from our committees.

Greetings, neighbors! Our monthly CAC meeting will take place Monday, April 20th at 7PM at the Lions Park Community Center.

This month we’ll brainstorm about development in the commercial areas around our neighborhoods. Have ideas of what you’d like to see on Capital Boulevard or in Longview Gardens Shopping Center? Share your ideas and let’s make it happen! We’ll also discuss ways to reach more of our neighbors through the formation of a neighborhood planning committee. Learn how you can help get the word out about our CAC.

Last, but not least, we’ll be electing our new East CAC Vice Chair. Eastsiders Pam Singleton and Van Alston are our current nominees, though we’ll also take any last-minute nominations before the vote.

Hi neighbors! It’s time again for our meeting! The East CAC will meet at Lions Park Community Center from 7 to 8:30 PM Monday night.

Our speaker will be Eric Lamb, Raleigh’s transportation services manager. He’ll be here to discuss the process of getting sidewalks put in, the costs associated with it, and any other questions you might have. If you’ve ever wondered how sidewalks might fit in our neighborhoods, now is the time to ask!

Also on the agenda are two zoning cases. We’ll hear about Z-18-09, the convenience store at the corner of Poole and Norwood. We’ll also revisit Z-15-09, the 512 and 604 Donald Ross Drive properties.

We’ll also discuss potential ways to better organize our CAC so that we get more of our neighbors involved. You’ll get a chance to add your ideas or volunteer to help out if you’d like.
