The City’s Parks and Recreation Department has chosen Saturday, May 1st for its Lions Park Playground Community Build Day. That’s when East Raleigh neighborhood volunteers will help put together the new playsets at Lions Park.
I’ve seen community builds done before and can say that they’re very rewarding and a lot of fun. Hope to see you there!
Below is Cindy Trumbower’s message about the community build:
Join us as we team up to build a new playground at Lions Park. We are seeking 60 volunteers who do not have to be skilled, trained or have any special tools; they just have to be enthusiastic, energetic, a team player, willing to work, and have fun, fun, fun! (And be at least 18 years of age).
Everyone must pre-register!
Build date: Saturday, May 1st
Time: 8:30 am –3:30 pm
Location: Lions Park,
516 Dennis Avenue,
Raleigh, NC 27604Registration begins at 8:30am and stay until project completion time at 3:30 pm. We’ll provide training, supplies, snacks and beverages.

Tour a Recycling Sorting Center!
Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
Have you ever wondered what happens to the recyclable materials once Raleigh Recycling crews collect them from your recycling bin? They are all mixed together in the recycling truck. Where do they go? Who’s going to deal with that mess of materials? What if unacceptable materials got put in?
Get your questions answered! Raleigh Recycling is now offering quarterly tours of our recycling contractor’s processing facility. The place where all the materials are taken is called a material recovery facility, usually abbreviated MRF, and pronounced “merf”. This is the place where all the materials are sorted out – both by people and by equipment. Once sorted, each material gets baled up and is shipped off to a manufacturer to be made into new products.

East CAC Meeting Minutes
February 2010
Submitted by Secretary Sue Sturgis
Chairman Mark Turner called the meeting of the East CAC to order shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, February 15 at Lions Park Community Center. There were about 35 people in attendance, with about a half-dozen attending for the first time. The meeting was recorded, and the audio will be available at www.eastraleigh.org. The January minutes were approved.
[Chair’s note: The audio has been misplaced and will be posted should it be located.]
[Update 14 March: Audio has since been posted.]
OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS: In good news from around the CAC, Raleigh Community Services Liaison Charlene Willard reported that the Lions Park South Community Watch has been formed, and she presented members with a plaque for their organization. Charlene would like the entire CAC to be represented by community watches.
She also reported on the Pepsi Refresh Project, a website sponsored by the soda company that allows people, businesses and non-profits to submit “ideas that will have a positive impact.” Site visitors get to vote on their favorites, which are eligible for grants of between $5,000 and $250,000. For more information, visit www.pepsirefresh.org.

The East CAC will meet on Monday, March 15th at 7 PM at Lions Park Community Center, 516 Dennis Avenue.
We’ve got an exciting meeting this month with Planning Director Mitchell Silver and staff speaking to us about the upcoming plans for our New Bern Avenue and Capital Boulevard corridors. As you know, these areas have been neglected for years but now our city is turning its attention to them, putting development plans in place that will guide their growth for years to come.
Come hear what the city has in mind and tell us what you’d like these two “Main Streets” of East Raleigh to look like. We want to hear from you!
In addition, the East CAC OPED committee will meet at 6:30 before the main meeting to discuss the formation of separate Planning, Outreach, and Economic Development committees. If you’d like to play a role in one or more of these new committees, you’re encouraged to come to this meeting.
A reminder: this month’s meeting will be held in the community center’s gymnasium as our usual meeting room is being renovated.
Everyone have a great week and we’ll see you Monday!
Note: This CAC meeting will be streamed live on the Internet.
It’s that time of year when the NCSU volunteers with Service Raleigh look for projects to assist with in the community. Some Service Raleigh volunteers will be planting trees in East Raleigh in association with Trees Across Raleigh. Beyond that, there are still opportunities for these folks to help improve our community.
This year’s Service Raleigh day is Saturday, March 27th.
If you know of projects around East Raleigh that a team of volunteers could assist with, such as trash collection, insulating or painting homes, stream cleanup, or other such projects, let me know and I’ll work to get them done. The deadline for submitting projects is March 5th (next week), so please send those ideas ASAP!

Have a great weekend!
