Capital Boulevard Study mentioned in N&O

Ray Martin of the News and Observer mentioned the upcoming Capital Boulevard Corridor study in yesterday’s Midtown Raleigh News.

Want to help spruce up Capital Boulevard?

If so, the city wants to hear from you at a workshop scheduled for 6:30 p.m. June 24.

It’s the official kick-off for a wide-ranging study on how to transform the Capital Boulevard corridor between downtown and the Beltline into an attractive gateway to the Capital City.

Changes are likely to include street improvements, new businesses, upgrades of impaired Pigeon House Creek and additional housing.

If you plan to attend this important meeting next week (and as an East Raleigh resident you should!), please be sure to preregister with the city planning department so they will know how many to expect.

More information about the study (and the registration link) can be found here: http://is.gd/cREOx

Public Workshop On Capital Boulevard Corridor Study

City To Host Public Workshop On Capital Boulevard Corridor Study

The City of Raleigh will hold a public workshop on the Capital Boulevard Corridor Study on Thursday, June 24, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the new vehicle showroom at the Bobby Murray Chevrolet dealership located at 1820 Capital Blvd. Registration and check-in begins at 6 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.

The first public workshop is being held to define the corridor study area, identify key issues and opportunities, and refine the next steps in the study process. A brief presentation of the history of the corridor and a preliminary inventory of known issues will be given. Afterward, small group discussions will be held to gather public input on how best to transform Capital Boulevard into a vibrant mixed-use corridor. Capital Boulevard serves as the primary gateway to the heart of Raleigh and offers unique opportunities for redevelopment, open space creation, water quality improvement, and transit.

Parking for the public workshop at Bobby Murray Chevrolet will be available outside the showroom and in the adjacent Flea Market Mall parking lot. To register to attend, go to www.raleighnc.gov/planning. Special accommodations for residents with disabilities can be made by calling the City’s Public Affairs Department at 996-3100.

Raleigh’s Multi-Modal Transit Center

A draft report for Raleigh’s Union Station has been completed for public review. The objective of the design and development strategy is twofold: first, to prepare a conceptual multi-modal transit center design that coordinates the location of various existing and future transit service areas with convenient connections among service platforms; and second, to prepare a development strategy for properties within and in the vicinity of the transit center.

A public open house will be held on May 12 to present the report findings and answer questions. The Raleigh Urban Design Center (133 Fayetteville Street) will host two opportunities to attend:

12:00 to 1:30 p.m. – Informal information session with City staff available to answer questions

6:30 to 8:00 p.m. – Formal presentation followed by question & answer

After the open house, a 30 day comment period will be provided followed by the preparation of a final report. Comments must be submitted to Martin Stankus by June 11, 2010.

Council approves RPD field office

Great news! The Raleigh City Council just authorized the city to enter into a lease with the owners of the Food Lion shopping center at 1100 N. Raleigh Boulevard for the Raleigh Police Department field office! No move-in time has been specified but things should start happening soon.

Thanks to Officer Kryskowiak, Michael Ballen, Capt. Deans, and Chief Dolan for their help in making it happen!

Lockwood and Lions Park playground builds

The Lockwood playground build is progressing nicely, as the photograph above shows.

The Lions Park playground build is scheduled for this Saturday. Cindy Trumbower from the city’s Parks and Rec department reports that there are now so many volunteers that she’s having to turn people away! Therefore, the 60 registered volunteers will make the new Lions Park playground a reality Saturday morning. It should be fun!
