East CAC meets tonight: Holiday Social!

The East CAC will have its November meeting tonight at 7 PM at Lions Park, 516 Dennis Avenue.

We’ll hear our usual inspections, parks, and police news. We’ll then hear from the folks from the Shoppes at Brookside at the corner of Brookside and Glascock, talking to the community about the condos being
finished and the businesses folks would like to have there.

Following that we’ll have our annual holiday social, where you can enjoy some food and meet your neighbors. It should be a great time.

Come on out tonight and bring a neighbor if you can! See you there!

The East Citizens Advisory Council held its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18 at the Lions Park Community Center. About 50 people attended, with a handful there for the first time. The September minutes were approved. Chairman Mark Turner recorded the meeting, with video available at www.eastraleigh.org.

INSPECTIONS: Someone asked about an abandoned shopping cart left on the street; Inspector Dudley Winslow said to call him and he’d take care of it. Regarding a burned-out house at Culpepper and Kennington, someone attending the meeting said his family has connections to the property and reported that rebuilding is set to get underway soon.

The East Citizens Advisory Council held its monthly meeting on Monday, Sept. 20 at the Lions Park Community Center. There were about 45 people in attendance, with about 10 attending for the first time. The meeting was recorded, with video available at www.eastraleigh.org.

The meeting opened with success reports, which included East Raleigh Community Day on Aug. 14, the first meeting of the Lockwood Neighborhood Watch on Aug. 17, and the Raleigh Neighborhood Exchange on Sept. 17. Henry Ward, property manager for the Food Lion shopping center, is interested in hearing from local residents about changes they would like to see there so merchants can better serve the neighborhood’s needs. The Raleigh Police Department opened its new office at the Food Lion shopping center in August.

East CAC meets Monday, Oct 18th

The East CAC will meet Monday, October 18th at 7 PM at Lions Park Community Center, 516 Dennis Avenue.

On our agenda is Mr. Marc Newman of St. Augustine’s College, who will be speaking about St. Aug’s redevelopment efforts in our area. We’ll also hear from the CASA program’s work to get folks back on their feet. Finally, we’ll hear about the Raleigh Digital Connectors program, helping SE Raleigh communities bridge the “digital divide.”

We’ll also have East CAC refrigerator magnets to pass out.

Community Conversation featuring East CAC neighborhoods

Celebrating Ordinary Architecture

Raleigh has many post-WWII neighborhoods of modest colonial and ranch houses like Rochester Heights or Cameron Village. What makes these houses and neighborhoods special? What techniques are there for updating these smaller, mid-century architectural gems? To find out, please join the Raleigh Historic Districts Commission (RHDC) and Preservation North Carolina for a Community Conversation where local experts will discuss the character, charm, and evolution of Raleigh’s post-War neighborhoods. Subdivisions discussed will include Battery Heights, Cameron Village, Capitol Heights, Hi-Mount, Longview Gardens, Madonna Acres, and Rochester Heights.

Z-24-10 (Poole and Norwood) to be heard at Sept. meeting

Dan Coleman contacted me yesterday to ask that his Z-24-10 case be added to our agenda. As our October meeting would come a day after the public hearing for Z-14-10 (which is Oct 19th at 2 PM in front of City Council), I will instead add it to our September agenda.

Z-24-10 is a rezoning case for the convenience store property at Poole and Norwood. You can find the filed case here.

As mentioned before, our next CAC meeting is Monday, Sept. 20th at 7 PM at Lions Park Community Center, 516 Dennis Avenue.

East CAC meets Monday, Sept 20th

We’ve got lots going on this month at the East CAC! Raleigh Police will return to in a follow-up to last year’s meeting where RPD will ask for our feedback on its priorities in our area. We’ll also elect our CAC officers and choose who will be our East CAC Neighborhood Recognition Award winner.

Also, be sure to attend this year’s Raleigh Neighborhood Exchange, where I’ll be a speaker discussing how to connect communities.

Community Day volunteers needed!

The City of Raleigh, East Citizens Advisory Council and several additional organizations are holding an event where East Raleigh neighborhoods can come together and interact to help promote a more engaged, knowledgeable and crime free community. We are looking for about 20 volunteers ages 18 and older to help with set up, event management and clean up. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt!

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please fill out the Volunteer Registration Form and e-mail it back to me by August 9th. The event is on Saturday, August 14th from 2-6pm. Volunteer shifts are from 12-4pm, 4-8pm or all day. The event will take place in the Food Lions Parking Lot on N. Raleigh Blvd. Please feel free to give me a call or send me an e-mail if you have any questions!
