Hearing to adopt the 2030 Comprehensive Plan

THE CITY OF RALEIGH NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING TO ADOPT THE 2030 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN FOR THE CITY OF RALEIGH.

Notice is given that a joint meeting of the Raleigh City Council and Planning Commission is to be held on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber of the Avery Upchurch Municipal Building. A public hearing will be conducted to consider amending the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The City Council may consider and adopt proposed amendments to the Comprehensive Plan as amended in any manner, following public hearing.

NOTE: A copy of the proposed 2030 Comprehensive Plan for the City of Raleigh is on file with the Raleigh City Planning Department, the Raleigh City Clerk’s Office and /or can be accessed via the internet at www.planningraleigh2030.com.

Neuse River Greenway Trail Open House

An open house for the Neuse River Trail will be held at Hedingham on March 23rd.

Our Crabtree Creek Greenway will connect to the Neuse River Trail. Once it’s complete, you’ll be able to walk or ride from here all the way to Horseshoe Farm Park near Falls Lake or down to Johnston County. Pretty cool.

Donations needed for Brenda Pulley

As you may have heard, a neighbor of ours on Millbank Street died in a
house fire February 21st. Elvis Pulley died tragically when the kerosene
heater he was refueling exploded.

Now his widow, Brenda Pulley, has literally nothing left. Not only has
she lost her husband, she has no furniture, clothes, or household items
of any sort. She does not even have a roof over her head, as their home
was destroyed by the fire.

If you have any items you wish to donate, whether it be furniture,
clothing, appliances – whatever, contact me and I will see that it gets
to her. If items need to be picked up, that can be arranged, too. You
can also bring items to our March 16th CAC meeting if that is more
convenient for you.

Please, let’s all do what we can to help Brenda put her life back together.

New East CAC mailing lists

As mentioned in last night’s meeting, I’ve set up new mailing lists for the East CAC. Yahoo Groups requires subscribers to sign up for Yahoo, which can be an impediment to joining. The new list uses the common GNU Mailman software for managing lists.

IMPORTANT: If you were signed up for the Yahoo list you need not make any changes. Your list membership has been automagically transferred to these new lists. The Yahoo list will soon be decommissioned and will no longer accept new members.

After thinking more about it today, I decided to sign up everyone for both lists. You’d be losing discussion ability if I didn’t, and I didn’t want you to miss anything. If for some reason you need to cut back on incoming email, you can switch to digest format (or unsubscribe, heaven forbid!) using the links below.

Please let your neighbors know about this list and encourage them to sign up themselves.

CAC meeting Monday Jan 19th at 7 PM

Hi neighbors,

We will be having our East CAC meeting Monday night, January 19th at 7PM at the Lions Park Community Center. Though Monday is a city holiday, we will be fortunate to have Asst. Public Utilities Director Ken Waldroup to come speak with us about the city’s water reuse project and how it will affect East Raleigh.

We will also be voting on the proposed rezoning case Z-15-09, involving properties at 512 and 602 Donald Ross Drive.

Below is official agenda, though there will be other topics discussed as well.

Longview (Poe) House rezoning meeting January 13th

The Raleigh Planning Commission will consider the rezoning request Z-50-08 of the Longview (Poe) House at their meeting Tuesday, January 13th at 9 AM in the Raleigh City Council Chambers.

The law firm handling the rezoning, K&L Gates, has sent the CAC a list of conditions to be applied to the property and have stated that it is their understanding that these conditions satisfy the neighbors along Luther Road.

St Aug’s students to hold vigil today

Audrey Galloway of St. Aug’s tells me there will be a student-led vigil this afternoon at 3 PM at the corner of Oakwood Avenue and Tarboro Road: the site of Friday’s shooting death of a 16-year-old.

The vigil is calling for an end to the violence. Community leaders and neighbors are invited to attend. Please pass this on to others.

Community meeting on proposed ABC store

Is an ABC Store in Longview Gardens Shopping Center good for the community? Come to a community meeting next Thursday and discuss!

The Issue

First Citizens is selling the bank building at the Longview Shopping Center to the Wake County ABC Board. The board plans to demolish the building and build an approximately 4400 square foot ABC store on the site.

Due to tremendous concern over the project, members of the Wake County ABC Board have agreed to meet with the community at Sherrill’s Barber and Cosmetology School, located behind the bank building, on November 6th at 7:00 PM. The community response at the meeting will be critical in determining if the project moves forward.

Saint Augustine’s homecoming parade

Saint Augustine’s College will be conducting a homecoming parade on the streets circling the Saint Aug campus on Saturday, November 1st. The proposed parade route is as follows:

Start – SAC Gym
R on State St
R on Glascock St
R on Delaney St
R on Milburnie Rd
Continue on Milburnie Rd. It will become Hill St
R on Boyer St
R on Tarboro St
L on Oakwood Ave
R on State St
End – SAC Gym

Total Distance: 2.2 Miles
